SLAVIC PAGANISM RITUALS AND FESTIVALS

Mythologies are strongly connected with rituals and celebrations. In Slavic mythology, those ceremonies were cyclical and were repeated every single year. Unfortunately, Christianization had a strong influence on the names and processes of many rituals - they were changed with Christian celebrations - e.g. Christmas. One of the not-known festivals is Harvest Day. After the end of the harvest, people gathered at the temple of Svantevit - the Slavic god of war. In front of this temple was placed a massive wheat cake. Then the priest with the highest rank would hide behind this cake and ask those gathered people if they see him. This question is linked with the next prayer for a substantial and more bountiful harvest next year - that big that people wouldn't see him standing behind that ritual cake. Also, there are many different festivals that are mostly connected with nature and passing seasons - Winter, Spring, and Summer Festivals. During those celebrations, people would assemble, walk around the village, sing songs, and ritualize.

  1. So Christianity essentially adapted already existing rituals, holidays and celebrations to fit the purpose of the new religion.
