TROY - MYTHICAL STORY OR REAL PLACE?

Everybody knows the myth about the great war between Greeks and Trojans. For many years people thought of it as a completely made-up story, but not Frank Calvert, he was a believer. He knew that such a remarkable story has to be partly true. His passion and curiosity led him to the Çanakkale region in Turkey - a place where Homer described Greek encampment. In 1847 Frank met a geologist named Charles Maclaren. His topographical studies of this area helped him find the 32-meter mound - Hisarlik. This mound was expected to be the place where the legendary city was. Soon after, Calvert decided to buy 2000 acres of farmland to start the dig. However because of the Crimean War and lack of money the dig had to be delayed. After the end of the war, in 1868 he had found a sponsor - it was a solution to the money problem. It was Heinrich Schliemann. His help prompted excavations to discover artifacts from different eras. But what is even more fascinating they found damaged human skeletons, broken arrowheads, and the remains of the massive fortification wall. This evidence was hard enough that UNESCO labeled Hisarlik the archeological site of Troy.

Everything, even myths, has a grain of truth in it.
