UNDERWORLD IN DIFFRENT MYTHOLOGIES

People always were curious about death and the afterlife. That's why we can see the diverse view on that in different cultures. In Egyptian mythology, Osiris is the powerful figure who rules the Egyptian underworld - Duat. Before coming to different parts of the death kingdom newcomer had to go through funeral rituals. After that Anubis put his heart on one side of a scale, on the other was placed the feather of the goddess of justice - Moth, If the heart was heavier it meant that the deceased was a sinner and he would be sent to Amit to be killed once again. If it had the same weight as the feather, he was sent to Aaru - an Egyptian paradise. In Norse mythology, Valhalla was the place only for the greatest warriors, and the others were taken to Helheim. Helheim was a place for people who hadn't glorious death, that's why Hel - the ruler didn't punish people, she never was meant to be evil.

Afterlife has always been fascinating, and stories behind that in different cultures are even more fascinating.

  1. The two kinds of afterlife you describe seem a lot gentler than the Christian vision of hell, with its torture, fire and what not.
