WINDIGO PSYCHOSIS - MYTHOLOGY IN SCIENCE

Native American folklore is full of horrible monsters. Windigos are probably the most popular ones. These mythological creatures are described as vicious and cannibalistic beasts that desire to kill and devour their victims. In most versions of the myth, a human becomes a windigo after his or her spirit is corrupted by avarice or weakened by terrible conditions like starvation or cold. These conditions can lead to cannibalism which is a dishonorable act. In the modern world, a mental condition where Cannibalistic desires overtook humans is called Windigo Psychosis. This term was first used by Oblate Missionary J. E. Saindon in the 1920s while he was working in a Cree community in the western James Bay area. He met there a woman who claimed that she encountered people who wanted to murder and consume her. After that occurrence, he described this phenomenon, and since that mental condition where someone is willing to devour human flesh is known as Windigo Psychosis.
