HOW MYTHOLOGY AFFECTS WRITERS

During writing books, authors are looking for inspiration from various sources. Many great and popular writers use mythology as one of those sources. J.R.R Tolkien, author of The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, or The Silmarillion, was one of them. In his opuses, we can see plenty of references to the Norse myths. Fields where we can see similarities are for instance: settings, language, and characters. In his books, Tolkien slightly changed the motifs and characteristics of heroes. But we can still recognize places and figures by the description given by the author. For example dwarfs, their characteristics and roles in the mythology are the same as those in Tolkien's stories. Pretty same thing apply to places. In the mystical world portrayed by Tolkien - Middle-Earth is the counterpart of Norse Midgard and Valinor is a counterpart of Asgard (one of the Nine Worlds associated with Norse gods). Those similarities are connected with Tolkien's fascination with mythology and stories told by many generations.

It's amazing how mythology can influence the minds of eminent writers.

  1. Seems like a lot of authors, scriptwriters and directors have been fascinated with Norse mythology, judging from the number of series and films about Vikings and the like.
